A House Divided…

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Abraham Lincoln.untitled-design

Honest Abe quoted the Bible when he accepted the nomination to run for the Senate representing the Illinois Republican Party. He knew the slavery issue was one that would tear the Union in two.

Watching the “Breaking News” as accusations unfold, morals are questioned, and  character slandered can be depressing.

It seems that people are not voting for candidates they support, rather they are voting against the candidate they distrust or dislike the most.It is easy to think that in a week,  it will be OVER.

But, will it?

People on both sides of the party lines are quick to call each other names that we would scold our kids for using on the playground.

We are quickly becoming a house divided. Family divided. Country divided.

Even the evangelical churches are divided.

How easy is it to send aid or comfort to those suffering on the other side of the world, yet, cringe with disgust when we see the bumper sticker on our neighbor’s car that doesn’t represent our views.

Sometimes it is a crowd mentality.

Sometimes it is a preference.

Sometimes it is a conviction, much like what founding fathers risked their lives for, each man’s story as unique as his carefully inked signature.

While we have the responsibility to vote, we also have the right to our own opinion and  WHY we believe certain things about certain issues. Everyone has a story, and even if it is different from yours or mine, they deserve the courtesy to be heard, not merely tolerated, quickly labeled, and discarded.

Abraham Lincoln would be saddened to see our Nation as close to division now as it was in 1858.

I know I am.

What about you? Are you feeling voter fatigue?

Let’s remember we are still “One Nation under God…”
