The Best Review

One of my favorite subjects in school was history. Probably because it was a series of stories connected together. It wasn’t like doing math where numbers had values of measurement, time or space, it was something I could imagine, that had emotion, adventure and built character.

I think history is still exciting. The ability to pass that on to the next generation is important. Today’s society has so much emphasis on the “NOW” and “YOLO” -you only live once-mentality, without thought to what is ahead or behind. I am afraid along the way we might lose something. A part of where we came from, who were are as a nation, and the people who are real examples of life lived to the fullest.

I have asked a group of 4th graders to read “The Adventures of Pearley Monroe” and give me their feedback. I wanted to make sure that this story was something that 10-12 year olds would connect with. I waited, hoping that all my work wasn’t in vain.

Today I got this short e-mail from their teacher.

        I began reading the book to my kids today. I set it up with the photos and then read the prologue.  They are hooked.

When we were done, I asked, “So, what do you think?” I got the full class answer of, “It’s gooooooddd.”

Honestly, they haven’t responded to much like that this year. They enjoy what we do, but no literature has caught them like that. I look forward to tomorrow!  

Needless to say, I am thrilled.  “The Adventures of Pearley Monroe” is almost 50% funded. It is my goal to see it not only funded and printed, but in the hands of youngsters who still use their imaginations and wonder what Back Bart really looked like, or what would they have done if they had been lost in an abandoned tunnel.
